Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Cloud Computing

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Cloud Computing

What is cloud computing? How it is done? Can it benefit my small business? Here we have answered everything you always wanted to know about cloud computing.

What is cloud computing? Why should I care about that?

These are the questions that you probably want to ask if you are new to cloud computing. Right?

In simple words, cloud computing is the storage and sharing of data and applications over the virtual servers instead of your PC’s HDD. It is also referred as Internet-based computing. For example, Google Drive is a cloud computing service allowing you to share, access, store and edit the data online.

It gives your business an instant ability to access files and data in real time and anywhere across the globe. This is why many enterprises around the world prefer cloud computing to ensure flexibility, data security, updates, and mobility in their business operations.

History of Cloud Computing

Surprisingly, the idea of cloud computing dates back to 1960s. It was an era of computing when huge mainframe machines were looked as the future of technology. Major corporations used to rely on these machines to share their computing resources with other businesses on a payment basis. These businesses had to access these computing resources from different locations. To make the process more convenient and accessible to all, the concept of cloud computing came into existence.

Why it is called cloud computing? This is because clouds were used as a symbol to represent the Internet for over 20 years.  The term “cloud computing” was coined by Compaq in mid 1990s.

How Does Cloud Computing Work?

Cloud computing is an Internet based computing. In cloud computing, there are hundreds of networks of servers are used to perform data processing task between them. It is somewhat like a massive IT network connecting millions of systems to make data storage and sharing easy and cost effective. In early day, this kind of computing was provided with the use of supercomputers, though it was limited to research and military organizations. The cloud is not about storing data on a home or office network. It is not a hosted service either.

For it to be called cloud computing, you are required to access your data or your programs over the Internet or have your information synced with other sources over the Internet. An online connection enables you to access your data anywhere, anytime.

What are the Types of Cloud Computing Network?

Generally, there are three types of cloud computing network, including public cloud, private cloud and community cloud.

Public Cloud:

It is the basic and most economical model of cloud services. It is a platform where users can access and use each other’s shared infrastructure. Public cloud services are free or provided on PPU model. The cloud model is beneficial for small businesses that lack infrastructure and resources. Google, Amazon and Microsoft are the leading providers of public cloud.

Private Cloud:

A private cloud is not as free and open as public cloud as the data is restricted and access within an organization. Therefore, they are the most secure cloud type. Private cloud is provided by the IT team or third party vendor. If your business has critical data, private cloud is a right solution for you.

Community Cloud:

Community cloud is a multi-tenant infrastructure shared by the organizations with similar interests or goals.

Hybrid Cloud:

A hybrid cloud, as the name implies, is a mix of public, community and private clouds. For instance, a business can use the resources by a public cloud while using a private cloud.

What are the Types of Cloud Computing Service?

  • Software as a Service (Saas) to access subscribed applications over the web.
  • Platform as a Service (Paas) to build cloud based resources for your business.
  • Infrastructure as a Service (Iaas) to use servers and data centres space on pay per use basis.

What are the Benefits of Cloud Computing for Small Businesses?

Cloud computing is beneficial for small business in many ways. Many small businesses lack resources and infrastructure to manage and maintain their data. With cloud computing, they can store and access their data over the Internet. In this way, they can save money and space well.
